When we walk through a garden or squeeze and orange peel, we are breathing in the aromatic essence of the plant. Essential oils are the very concentrated oils distilled from plants. These oils are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of the plant. It can actually take thousands of pounds of plant material to be able to produce one single pound (or less) of essential oil. We are left with products that have hundreds of beneficial characteristics. Every essential oil is comprised of numerous chemical constituents that give them their beneficial properties.

Why do essential oils have so much therapeutic value? Plants are carbon based, just like humans are. They naturally face a lot of the same environmental threats like we do such as predators (pests and insects in their case), viruses, fungi, bacteria, etc. When they do, the plants secrete an oily substance that can protect them from these threats. When we extract those oils, we are harnessing all of the amazing properties in a concentrated form. On top of providing environmental protection to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used histrorically for food preparation, beauty treatment, and in health-care practices.

Essential oils truly embody all of the powerful protective, regenerating, and immune-strengthening properties of plants in a potent form. Essential oils are tiny molecules that are fat soluble, which means that when we apply them to the body, they are able to easily and quickly penetrate the skin and be absorbed. And, because of this fat solubility, they are able to penetrate the fatty layer surrounding our cells and protect against outside threats inside the cell. In fact, even when cells have become hardened because of things like oxygen deficiency, essential oils are like super warriors in that they can still fight their way into these hardened cell membranes. The other amazing thing about essential oils is that they work FAST! They have the ability to affect every cell within the body in as little as twenty minutes and then are simply metabolized like other nutrients.
