EverythingEssential DIY Sunscreen

Do you know what’s in your sunscreen? According to the Environmental Working Group, you should!!! Did you know that the rate of skin cancer diagnosis and especially melanomas is on the rise, despite the millions of individuals around the world who are liberally applying their sunscreen? Some of the leading public health authorities including the FDA, the National Cancer Institute and the International Agency for Research on Cancer have conceded that according to current research, there is no evidence to support the belief that sunscreens alone reduce the rate of skin cancer. From potentially harmful and toxic ingredients to little to no UVA protection, the majority of the sunscreens found in your supermarket are not living up to their claims.

While there are a few all-natural sunscreens popping up on the market, many are very expensive and still may contain additives or allergenic ingredients. The most popular ingredient in these natural varieties is zinc oxide, the same ingredient found in that white paste you slather on babies bottoms in the case of a rash. If you look back at those retro photos of lifeguards from 20-30 years ago, you’ll notice that most of them had white noses. That is because zinc oxide naturally leaves a white, chalky residue on the skin which helps to block out those harmful UVA rays. Zinc oxide is also a popular choice for sun protection since it doesn’t break down in the sun like many other sunscreens, and it provides excellent sun protection with no harmful side effects.

Many essential oils can also provide excellent protection from the sun and even add to the SPF rating of your homemade zinc oxide based sunscreen! In this recipe, I chose to use doTERRA’s lavender and helichrysum essential oils for their amazing skin protecting abilities!
